156. It all links!

Alright, so Charles Darwin said that the fittest will survive and be able to successfully reproduce and pass the good gene to their youngs so that they would thrive in the environment at that time. I have been taught and told many times not to be mistaken by the word “fittest” and “strongest” – yes, Dr.G made such distinction very clear. (So, no. The strongest in a group not necessarily be “fit” enough to survive. Some characteristics like co-operation and mutual respect between species are key traits of defining “fit”.)

But I guess “fittest” can also be applied to human geography. Not that this thought popped up when I was in GE1105(Human Geo.) class but rather, in AB1503.

This land I now stand on existed long long long time ago and hitherto, many names were given to it. Po-li was one, Po-ni another, Pu-ni, Wen-Lai to add some more but whatever name it was given, the people living then and now, some believed were of the same race – the Melayu (of course with other races migrating in and out). Since the Malay Peninsula, as well as Borneo and some parts of Indonesia were merged as one before, it is quite possible to say that people then, shared and moved around that one BIG piece of land. Therefore, although there was possibly a quite diversified racial community then, one of the few that was first founded is the Melayu race.

So I guess this pretty much explains the M in MIB that stands for Melayu and why MIB is the concept my country adheres to. Because it is believed that Melayu was once and still is the inhabitants of this area (a country now) and we, unlike some other countries, are not “foreign” to this land. Like take Philippines for instance: Philippines then was under Brunei Government until the Spanish came and brought Christianity with them. So really, Spanish people would be considered “foreign” since they stepped into a country not of their own. Philippines changed so much after the Spanish occupancy.

But here, the Melayu existed then on this land and therefore, it would be logical to say that our concept preserves the already-existed race; the majority race. We were once under the British Empire but struggle was seen throughout the centuries and the Sultans of Brunei aime(d) and strive(d) to protect his/their people.

With that as just one example, I think people, humans – make their own groups and have their own ideologies and concepts and principles to be together in order to live and survive. It’s not just in the genes apparently. It’s a lot more to that  in this one word – “fittest”.

If every species requires the necessary genes to survive, then a country must also has its own genes in order to thrive.
